This past year, a house in Williamsburg, Virginia won the 2023 title of “Ugliest House of the Year.” This 134-year-old farmhouse was built in the 1890s, and over the years it was left abandoned. The 70 acres the 2,277-square-foot house was built on were overgrown, and the property was full of clutter, debris, rotting wood, and gaping holes in the floors. The farmhouse was a problem for both the owner and the neighborhood, with some neighbors even joking that they thought it was haunted, according to an article published by the NAR (National Association of Realtors®). It was in dire need of a home makeover, and there was only one man for the job.
Daniel Nice, a We Buy Ugly Houses franchisee based in Virginia, decided to give the farmhouse a second chance. After buying the property, he renovated the entire structure from top to bottom, updating its utilities and living spaces while maintaining some of the original elements, such as its handcrafted staircase and some of the old-growth crepe myrtles and magnolia trees in the yard. After a seven-month renovation, the house was fully restored and finally ready to be a home.
